On August 27, 2009, at 10:00 pm, Amherst Police Officers responded to a North Amherst apartment complex for a report of an armed home invasion. The victims reported that 2 or 3 masked men entered their home, armed with a small metal bat, and assaulted the occupants of the apartment. One of the residents was struck several times with the bat. Other occupants of the home were able to fight off the assailants who then fled on foot. An extensive area search was conducted, including mutual aid assistance from a University of Massachusetts K9 unit used to help track the suspects. No one was located. One resident of the apartment, a 21-year-old man, was transported to Cooley Dickinson Hospital by Amherst Fire Department paramedics for lacerations to the head. He is expected to be released tonight. There were no other reported injuries.
